Intellectuals and foolish faults

Kunsang Tsering or Khyungsang, a teacher as well as a writer, has published many poems, essays, and short histories in both official and private magazines inside Tibet. He started publishing after he graduated from the Malho Teacher’s Training School and his first short story “Love under the Moon” was published in Drangchar, the most popular literary magazine in Tibet, in the late 1990s. He has two personal blogs, one on the Sangdhor website and one on the Gendun Chophel website. On his blog on the Gendun Chophel website, he only publishes poems while on his Sangdhor page, he mainly publishes articles focusing on primary education. (more…)

When is it unnecessary to beat the students?

When I was small, I was never really beaten in school, but my other classmates were often humiliated, and were sometimes seriously beaten by the teachers. Between classmates, hurting each other a little bit by playing tricks and making jokes on each other is normal, as they are simply naïve children. As the succeeding generations of a people residing on the high plateau, the unique nature of our playfulness is becoming more and more apparent: our sons are fond of playing, fond of jumping, fond of laughing and fond of touching everything they see. Inland China has many Tibetan classes, students in Tibetan areas graduating from primary school can begin to take entrance exams for inland Tibetan classes, after finishing junior high school they can take exams for senior high school or secondary technical school (Ch. zhongzhuan), after finishing senior high school they can take exams for college, after finishing secondary technical school they return directly to Tibet to work. Tibetan students who study in Tibetan inland classes, must return to Tibet to work, because their entire school tuition and living expenses are covered by the state. (more…)
